A Billion Lives

A Billion Lives has been released worldwide.

This film received NO funding to make this movie. I’ve already heard from #FreeTeamShit that it is being bootlegged.

There is no reason not to see it and NO excuse to watch it for free.

Son of a bitch, this is LESS than a bottle of e-liquid.

The Director of Scientific Communication with CASAA, Brian Carter, posted this on Twitter yesterday:

PAY for it. You can RENT it for only $3.49 or PURCHASE your copy for $9.95 here:

Speaking of discrimination

Since e-cigarettes and nicotine were deemed a tobacco product on National Tobacco Day, you can be fired, or “not hired” due to tobacco use.

In some cases, adult tobacco users have even been fired from their jobs just because they use tobacco products during their free time, and that’s not right….

…in some workplaces, if you smoke or dip, you won’t get hired.

That’s all here:

No Proof of Nicotine Addiction

Nicotine addiction MUST to be at the top five lies in public health, tobacco control and is, in my consumer-driven view, the largest lie in smoking “cessation”.

I’ve tweeted and posted this challenge to facebook to many useful idiots. Many of you have shared it, and thank you. (I’m still on a mission.)

NOT one public health expert has proven addiction to nicotine in my challenge.

Originally set at 30 days, I have not let it expire. I think they need more time.

*Think of the implications of the claim, and the multi-million dollar industry who is unable to prove me wrong.

Mike above is the VP of a company that believes lowering nicotine in cigarettes is a good idea.

More on that next week. In the meantime, they can still prove themselves right, and you can still donate to e-cigarette research.

WE are raising funds for Dr. Farsalinos & his team.

$605.00 has been raised so far.  To *donate any amount, please go here:

Raising FUNDS for E-Cigarette Research

01

Dr. Farsalinos is well aware of this fundraiser. I’ll make this as brief as I can.

Think back to when you first looked for research on e-cigarettes. You were (and still are) finding glorified journalism and public health websites choosing to tell a fabricated story.

(I’ve covered that here)

At times, you’d find fiction.

In the world of e-cigarette research, one name stands out from the crowd. Dr. Farsalinos.

Dr. Farsalinos is a Cardiologist.

I We are raising money HERE  for Dr. Farsalinos and his team of researchers.

(Nicotine Addiction: An Open 30-Day Public Health Challenge)

Why did I choose his team?

Because I trust him and his team to tell me the truth about what they discover, regardless of what they find. They do this to relay proper and unbias information to the consumer, good or bad. Period.

He is providing us with information.

“Unbiased, reliable – full access” information.

We can’t expect him and his team to do his research for free.

I access and refer to his work constantly. SO do you.

He speaks around the 48-minute mark here:

Global Forum On Nicotine

So, to clarify, this GoFundMe fundraiser is about

  • Raising funds for Dr. Farsalinos and his team at ecigarette-research.org
  • Requesting Public Health, Anti-Tobacco, Tobacco Control and other professionals to provide documentation and prove “addiction to nicotine” with the criteria provided.
  • Proving or disproving the “addiction to nicotine” claim without tobacco or MAOI’s.

Why did I choose nicotine addiction as the subject?

Because powerful people in powerful positions have asserted themselves for decades by saying nicotine is addictive, and it raises awareness.

I painstakingly went through the criteria and sought advice from many I trust before submitting this challenge (and will blog about it about it once it’s over).

What happens to your donation?

If nicotine addiction is proven with the criteria:

Only 5% of the funds collected (minus fees) go to my most detested organization

👉  The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

The rest of the funds collected 95%  (minus fees)

If it unproven, unchallenged (expected), ignored or does not meet the criteria,

100% of the funds (minus fees) 👉

Here is why I say nicotine is not addictive:

Along with things like this, this and this  – there’s this:

If the data contradict the theory, throw out the data

Here is what Joe Gitchell said when I asked what he thought about the challenge:

If you want to have lives depending on “expert” opinions and hypothesis with the “we’re in control” offices of Glantz, Chapman, McKee, Malone and Capewell, be my guest.

We need further unbias, objective research without conflict of interest.

Donate, spread this around. Change the world.

I encourage you to tag and post it everywhere you know experts will see it. Make them think. Put them to the test. Ask them questions.

Give them the chance to answer the challenge on my blog.

The goal for this campaign is set at $25,000.00.

Sharing is caring. Go here and thank you in advance.

This is a fundraiser for ecigarette-research.org for further research by Dr. Farsalinos and his colleagues and a challenge for public health to prove nicotine addiction without tobacco or MAOI’s.

So far the challenge has raised $215.00, and one challenge has been submitted.

While many have been shown the challenge, there have been no submissions from “public health experts“:

The Emporer has blogged.

Glantz, who isn’t one of the elite royalty mentioned in this report, decided “As one of the 120 “leaders” who responded to the poll used to construct this document”, he strongly objects to the use of the subtitle, and spelled “necessarily” incorrectly as “necessarity” wrong – which leads one to believe he may, might, could  – or it is possible, he’s an idiot.

If you’re unfamiliar with Professor Glantz, he’s covered here from Paul: Rotund Reaver.

I’ve blogged about the mechanical genius here and here.

Tobacco Control Experts

Tobacco control experts have so much blood time on their hands – they have to waste time with a conspiracy session.

Drink the tea, Alice – find yourself a nice mushroom stool.

Control has wasted over 50 years sitting on the floor with crayons – pretending to “fight”.

More of this, please

In their zeal to punish the evil tobacco industry, many have thrown the baby out with the bathwater by ignoring scientific evidence, mislabeling e-cigarettes as dangerous tobacco products and stifling, and restricting access to, a technology that helps tens of thousands of people — perhaps more — safely and effectively quit smoking every year.

E-cigarette myths should go up in smoke

Speaking of Dr. Farsalinos

“He pointed to the example of a conference organised by the tobacco industry in Brussels last year, where scientists were sent letters criticising their participation by a US anti-smoking group – even though they had no links to the tobacco industry.”

Researcher claims ‘academic McCarthyism’ over e-cigarettes

One letter sent was here:

The criticisms Dr. Farsalinios speaks of in the quote with 7 others is here.

The URL was definitely not the title of the article:

http://www.heraldscotland. com/news /15166477.Scientist_defends_links_between_Big_Tobacco_and_vaping_industry/?ref=rss

Now, this has story has two parts, and Phil called it.

Dr. Farsalinos was misinterpreted in the article:

My job is to defend science and evidence, not any industries. In that respect, and after waiting for 24h for the journalist to revise, I am obliged to denounce an article published in the Sunday Herald Scotland in which I am MISINTERPRETED as defending links between the tobacco and vaping industries and characterizing attacks on research into vaping funded by Big Tobacco were a form of “academic McCarthyism”.

Dr. Farsalinos’ full response is here:

Vape Shops. This is your business.

You’re a vape shop owner? Are you saving lives and yourselves? Not afraid of the regulations your industry is under? Are you even aware there are regulations? If not, I’m talking to you. You’re probably already wondering who the hell I am and why I’ve got a chip on my shoulder. Well – let me explain myself and then we can move on from the formalities. I figure that’s only fair.

I’m not “in the industry”. I am however, a consumer. If you feel like I’m not talking to you, then you’re probably a stellar shop owner and are doing everything you can to save this industry, including your own business. As you were.

Don’t get confused, I’m also an advocate for you. Well, not really for you – for people like this lady who you haven’t met yet and about 40 million in the United States like her who may come visit YOU. See, I didn’t open a vape shop. I certainly wanted to in 2013 when I realized I could potentially help others realize what I had accidentally found out. Vaping worked when nothing else did. I say it saved my life. I get that.

I looked at doing so. I did cost analysis, looked at market trends *skyrocketing*, checked a few locations and saw 7 shops already competing within my home town of about 45,000. That itself was saturated. Still, forging ahead, I found wholesalers (NICE markups, eh?), I checked insurance rates – you know – all the things that go into starting a business.

I also gave serious consideration of the unknown FDA regulations coming down the line. I still wanted dearly to do it, but with all those factors, poor credit and having previously closed a business in 2007 – I also understood risk v.s. reward. I decided for my family – at the time, I could not take the risk.

Now that the formalities are out of the way, I know you should be THE front line in the battle against every law, restriction, tax and ban any way you can. I’d bet I  know your demographics better than you do. I understand nicotine strength and why it’s not addictive. I know why you’re talking people away from ego style products. I know why you’re selling high end equipment to folks who don’t WANT to blow clouds. I’ll bet I can talk shop about your first time customers as good or better than you can.

I know how you’ll lose business, and bet you the price of a brand new ego 2200 (at cost) that I could bring you more business to your shop. I’ll bet you don’t have a computer in your store to show research to customers when they have questions and I’ll wager your receipts don’t print out & tell customers about CASAA.

I’d venture to say you’re probably not a member of SFATA or the AVA or AEMSA. VTA or any local or state group. I’d bet if you had a sign explaining the FDA regulations we are ALL facing to your customers, they’d be just as pissed off as you are should be, because you’re not allowed by law to do things  to properly help the next smoker who may walk through that door.

fatcat5

I’ll bet you’re a former smoker, using +/- 3MG and you’ve got the most expensive rig available. I’ll bet you’re thinking I’m an asshole as you blow clouds at your screen. IF you’re not running e-liquid through your back room or basement, you’d be embarrassed to show me where it is you manufacture it. I’d bet you’ve tossed free shit into a crowd. If I’m describing you, I’ll bet you’re wondering how you can get your hands around my throat. That’s mutual. Save that energy, I’m not quite done yet.

I’ll venture to say you’ve pondered the trademark or intellectual properties covering the e-liquid – but after about 10 seconds, you’ve only run it through your mind a couple other times since. You’ve probably heard of marketing to children but didn’t think it applied to you. I could go on but you’re starting to either feel guilty or relate to who should be feeling guilty as described. We can still be friends, there is hope. Let’s call this a one-time free consulting session. You just need to pay attention. This, after all, is YOUR business.

I take advocacy seriously in my off hours. This is, after all, about lives. You also, regardless of the descriptions above, presumably got into the business to help people as you found it helped you. THAT is where I need your mindset to be right now before we go further. Refill your top, get over yourself. Hydrate. Let’s move on.

You should be able to spout these organizations off without fear or hesitation. You should be a member of at least ONE trade organization. Your customers, because you’re informing THEM as well as you are should be aware and a member of at least one of the consumer organizations. You know, to keep them aware in case you forget.

You should be aware of the thousands of vapers on social media who fight every day and don’t own a business. In fact, on twitter we’re called “shills” and worse, “Big Vapor” or “Big Vaping“…. I forget.

I haven’t even touched the tip of what you need to know. If you’re a vendor and you’ve read this far, I not only commend you – I respect you. See, we can be friends.

You should know who is against you. This, after all, is YOUR business.

Some awesome people have made this movie, A Billion Lives. It’s an independent film. On August 6th, I drove from Dayton to Milwaukee to see the U.S. Premier. I’ve SEEN it.

NON-smokers and the PUBLIC need to see it. NOW.

Here’s their latest teaser:

You should know how this documentary, A Billion Lives needs to be seen NOW, by the MILLIONS. You should know how highly I regard Aaron Biebert, A Billion Lives, Attention Era Media, and their teams and families for the sacrifices they’ve made to make this stunning film about our fight worldwide.

You should be organizing a screening or MULTIPLE screenings in YOUR area SPONSORING or co-sponsoring it (with or without other shops) to get your name out, buying blocks of tickets. (You’re still here?) Inviting new customers and smokers.

You should be inviting politicians, the local or closest Heart, Lung & Cancer association representatives in your area. Doctors. Nurses. College professors. Making sense?

I don’t know Fig personally, but I know he fights his ass off.

I don’t know Chris Hughes personally but I know he fought HIS ass off and is STILL fighing.

He’s now decided to seek election to the office of State Representative for the 84th Legislative District of PA.

I hope I’ve been condescending informative enough to get you motivated to act. To fight.

Alice in TobaccoLand.

aliceintobaccoland

According to Wikipedia, Tobacco control “is a field of international public health science, policy and practice dedicated to addressing tobacco use and thereby reducing the morbidity and mortality it causes”.

Let me break that down.

Public health science.  It also says practice.

Dedicated to addressing tobacco use via public health science, policy and practice.

Thereby reducing morbidity and mortality it causes.

It says mortality, not morality.

If the morality on vaping products doesn’t cease, the mortalities will continue.

Down the rabbit hole.

There are hundreds of organizations dedicated to addressing tobacco use. Those organizations are normally funded, among other things, by tobacco use. The Master Settlement Agreement, taxes, government grants and funding by pharmaceuticals trying convincing researchers to see “their side” so the FDA will trust & approve it are all part of the bigger picture. Don’t want any of them chasing us down the rabbit hole now, do we?

Let us have some tea, shall we?

 aliceintobaccolandtea

Tobacco control for the cessation world, involves “approved methods”, counseling, quit lines & other mythical suggestions in tobacco-land such as the always encouraging “quit or die”, you’re not trying hard enough… as smokers travel down the stop smoking hole…

Along come vaping products. Contested? Hot topic? Absolutely. Proof? Yep. Doubts? As far as your fingers can tweet or read in the media in the U.S.A..

It seems simple, really. Less tobacco use by smokers with an alternative in ANY way possible by anyone in the public health field, or by organizations like the Heart, Lung or Cancer associations…would be immediately and swiftly encouraged……well – that, my readers seems to be a fairy tale.

On to “Alice”.

To be balanced there has been some tweeting of vaping products as an alternative. I can’t possibly search for them all, but DID get a “maybe” here in 2015.

Here, in 2014, there was “waiting on evidence”.

Smokers falling a long way seem to always land in a hall with many locked doors….and a table appears… with concoctions and promises of cures to the smoker trying to stop with “try me” and “use as directed” and “FDA approved”. What do they feel, those trying so hard?

Shame.

Without success, a smoker is shamed regardless of the method chosen. (That is Tobacco Control training 101, is it not?)  Shamed, by everyone and their brother – who have been taught that forEVER.

Frustration.

Despite the EFFORT to cease tobacco use, the tobacco plant has nicotine. The cigarette has -how many other- chemicals that also MAKE tobacco addictive by design. Nicotine itself is not addictive, but the world doesn’t know – because they’ve been taught that as well… so they offer nicotine “replacement” therapies. (Love that word “therapy”).

Disillusion.

After multiple attempts for various reasons – be it poor health, children, mortality sinking in, whatever the personal decision was to try -the quit attempt fails or is aborted and the tobacco control machine turns to spin cycle. Round & round the smoker goes, falling down the rabbit hole.

We don’t know enough -about- long term effects. We know enough despite our own government’s challenge of regulations – we’ve stopped smoking -many accidentally- in a way NO other product or advice has come close to succeeding with on our journey down the hole. We communicate with each other via twitter, facebook and more. Learning daily. Empowered, making an impact.

As for long term effects? Well – we’re not smoking – if it were EXACTLY the same risk – I certainly wouldn’t have a blog.

Know enough, Alice. Make a commitment. Part of the perils of knowing enough is learning as much as you can, without bias and being able to relay that knowledge to others seeking information.

Speaking fluently with truth and conviction, will come naturally.

Long term:

agent

What is your definition of a long term study?

Supportive & hopeful methods are applied here.

BUT

The Pool of Tears

“Alice swims through her own tears and meets a mouse, who is swimming as well. She tries to make small talk with him in elementary French –  but her opening gambit “Où est ma chatte?” (“Where is my cat?”) offends the mouse and he tries to escape her.”

That’s the thing about Alice. Clarity. I’m still not sure how clear she is. I need some more tea!

RUTH

Pig and Pepper

“The Cheshire Cat appears in a tree, directing her to the March Hare’s house. He disappears, but his grin remains behind to float on its own in the air, prompting Alice to remark that she has often seen a cat without a grin but never a grin without a cat.”

 A Mad Tea-Party

“Alice becomes a guest at a “mad” tea party along with the March Hare, the Hatter, and a very tired Dormouse who falls asleep frequently, only to be violently woken up moments later by the March Hare and the Hatter. The characters give Alice many riddles and stories…”

   I cannot tell.

Yes. That’s where a consumer could choose an alternative to tobacco.

Not sure about you, but the ‘real world’ is where we are using #e-cigarettes instead of tobacco.

I’m as authentic as they come. Lorien is also. I troll her more than I troll you. 🙂

Ahhh…. nicotine. That’s another of my blogs.

Potential? Huh. Safer but too early to be so blithely reassuring?

See – told you Lorien is authentic. Genuine & approved.

Which are you, proponent or opponent?

Alice, involved in a paper with C. Gartner:

Dueling letters: which one would you sign?

In 2014, DO INDEED was capitalized for emphasis. I appreciate that.

Advice from a Caterpillar

I appreciate the fact that “Alice” is willing to engage with most on twitter. As you know, most of her colleagues will block and never engage.

Simon Chapman and Stan GlANTZ are two examples of (legaleeze: may, might, could) conniving denying monkeys. (Haven’t blogged Capewell or McKee yet.)

Everyone tweets something they regret at one time or another. We’re all human  -except the jury isn’t in on @Entropy72 yet.

This is where I was actually shocked at you. I know from another – personal experience when a professional diagnosis became a lawsuit to a “commoner”. Thing is, we’re professionals just like you. All walks of life, including mental health.

You took your well deserved lumps.

Then you did it again…….

I couldn’t tell if you were joking on this one any more than I can tell your true position on less harm with vaping products.

So off we go to the final chapter of Alice In TobaccoLand…

Alice’s Evidence

The Queen shouts her familiar “Off with her head!” but Alice is unafraid, calling them out as just a pack of cards, just as they start to swarm over her.

You engage with anecdotal vapers quaintly without making a statement. Teetering on a picket fence without committing. Rocking back and forth. A dangerous line of indecision. I strongly suggest focusing your eyes on the ball. Less tobacco use for the public. I imagine the implications of a “well respected by her peers” professional like yourself facing one of two possibilities.

  1. You’ll be ostracized by them by merely stating the emperor has no cloths. (Think of the thousands of twitter friends you’ll gain!)
  2.  You’ll empower them to take the stand with you, realizing the potential of millions of smokers very lives hang in the frustrating and disillusioned balance.

Either way, you can’t win, I suppose. Indignant irreverence for your own chosen profession, recognizing the “public” in public health and the public it intends to serve -at least at face value- is unacceptable.

You yourself are a Professor, a nurse, an environmental activist. The Editor of BMJ Tobacco Control Journal. You cannot convince me you’re set on sitting in the middle in a rocking chair on a fence. Being pragmatic  <–(funny that link mentions a unicorn) is “real-world application”.

I am the real world. This is not a guessing game, and lives are at stake. TAKE your eyes “OFF the ball” of tobacco for a moment. Vaping products are being regulated, restricted, taxed & banned as if – tobacco control’s livelihood – is at stake. Rather than being accepted as one way to become the end game, it is the ball they have become.

Speak to colleagues – some who are active tobacco control members around the world, all who have professional titles. They aren’t some rogue set of flunkies, they are your counterparts. Colleagues. Each are aiming for the same goal. Tobacco harm reduction. Here, at M.O.V.E..

Once you’ve done so, you can decide which this is. Real harm reduction, where you can join other members of M.O.V.E. and take a stand publicly against the fire and brimstone establishment  – who don’t like to be tested….

Or grab a match… pick your poison… and let the cards fall where they may.

cards

Pounding Sand – Guest blog by

@Vapingit with Commentary by VMS

Kevin and I got to talking a couple days ago and we came up with this crazy confusing idea because we were both thinking about blogging on pretty much the same things. Instead of us both blogging on our respective sites, I asked Kevin if he’d like to do a dual blog post with me. He writes his initial blog and I respond with my 2 cents. You end up with 2 small time advocates views and opinions on pretty much the same subjects, but it’s a dialogue and not just one sided. My responses will be in purple and bold.

Kevin: A couple weeks ago, there was a vaping meet in New Jersey. If you’re reading this, you probably already know there was no vaping allowed.

VMS: I am still completely baffled as to why anyone would organize an event in a state with a public vaping ban. It makes no sense whatsoever!

Kevin: I’m a non-scientific kind of guy. I had a back & forth on a thought months ago with another person I respect via email –  We, I don’t remember who “thought” of it, but we were discussing what else we could DO to benefit our cause. That conversation turned to me attending a vape meet, and one of us said – what a great place to monitor the air!

A vape meet would be the PERFECT place. Stick some monitors up on booths. Put some on the entry/exit signs. Don’t even tell anyone. Just do it, lets find out what’s in the air, good or bad. By good or bad, I mean GOOD or BAD.

VMS: I too thought this was a great idea and I still do. Just like when Dr. Farsalinos tested e-liquid for diacetyl content the results were largely NOT in our favour as a community or an industry. I still find it upsetting that this information, up until recently, has been ignored by some of our leading e-liquid manufacturers. It took Five Pawns being outed by Cloud 9 for their diacetyl and AP levels to get companies to start making a change. Why the delay when we have had clear NEGATIVE evidence that this problem existed?

Kevin: Well, with the Jersey thing this weekend, someone on a facebook group said something about the Health Department missing a great opportunity to do just that. I agreed. It went to twitter, I tagged Carl Phillips, Chief Scientific Officer at CASAA
where I was told:

cp
Well, maybe it’s me, but that seemed condescending. Again, I’m not a scientist, more of a lover of vape. I intentionally don’t want to find out it violates OSHA standards, I want to find out that it doesn’t. Come down to my level a moment.

That felt at a first GlANTZ that I was being told to pound sand – aaand I digress. I played stupid, but don’t understand.

cp2

But there’s this, *Carl from you in June *I’m a huge fan!) :
http://antithrlies.com/2015/06/03/notes-from-the-fda-e-cigarette-workshop/

VMS: Carl is a difficult one. The limited communication I have had with him through twitter has always been swift and to the point. At times, it felt harsh. I’m not sure if this is just down to it being social media and an inability to convey emotion through 140 characters or just the way it comes across. No matter, really. Carl is a great asset to the cause.

Back to Farsalinos diacetyl study. I am prepared to accept negative results. Results that can create a positive change. If we find out that the air quality at large events like this is really bad for us, then that only serves for us to improve the way we conduct these events. If we are going to keep claiming that our vaper in small quantity is harmless to bystanders and ourselves, then we should know what it is doing to us and bystanders on a larger scale.

Kevin: On Facebook, it was handled a bit differently.

cp3

Kevin: For better or worse, why HASN’T it been done? Why NOT? I’m still, even after the few paragraphs you’ve read, not a scientist. Let say out in Sunny California, there was, or will be a meet. Someone REALLY wants to do this on the anti-vaping side of our lives. THEY get the information and plaster it all over the news on the worst possible outcomes. Yes… and we’re sitting ducks. Trying to chase the truth down between their propaganda and lies like the old familiar formaldehyde stupidity.

VMS: So maybe an air test at a vape meet isn’t a great idea but a large indoor air study IS. Let’s encourage companies to put money towards a controlled large scale indoor air study then? We see how quick some of them are to support campaigns like #NotBlowingSmoke, so maybe we can get them to support some more research too? My biggest concern is that someone like Glantz who has the money available to him, will get this done before WE do. We all know how people like him would spin the data and the nano-particles. Why can’t we be on the offensive for once in this game?

Kevin: How the valuable resources were attained to debunk the formaldehyde scare are beyond me. Time and money. So, it leads ME to believe we should proactively take any sensible suggestion – *I thought it was a sensible thought* – and go with it to have it in OUR hands. Both for the vaper and anyone else.  Proactively. That’s my thought.

This study found on Vape About It concludes:
“…new study published in the Dec. 2014 issue of Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology found conclusive data that the vapor emitted from e-cigs and personal vapor devices is non-toxic. In other words, vaping is safe.”

They do this at ice rinks.
They do this at indoor motor-cross events.

Among other things, if it is already deemed “safe” and the second/third hand studies were also debunked, why NOT go all out at a vape meet, or at least a good Saturday afternoon at a large scale Brick & Mortar? Why NOT?

VMS: I don’t see a good enough reason why not. “Handing the ANTZ” ammunition isn’t a good enough excuse anymore. If we don’t tackle and combat it before they do, then they surely have all the ammunition they need. “They had the opportunity to test it, but all they care about is getting you addicted to nicotine and not about the safety of the product.” We already have this fight on our hands. It doesn’t matter what move we make as long as we are always on the defensive. I have the utmost respect for Carl and Greg both, but I simply don’t agree with burying our heads in the sand. As a vaper and a consumer that supports AVA and CASAA, I was disappointed by both of their responses, but can also understand where they are coming from. I do think that this is something that needs further discussion by the “heads” of our community though and should not be ignored or passed off as being another silly idea.

Kevin: It probably has been done and there was no conclusive evidence to it being “bad”… or they’d have pounded us with it, or it really hasn’t been done to a “vape meet arena scale”.

SO, why NOT? Well, if arenas are too big why not do it at a weekend full vape shop. Lets put it to the test. Lets FIND out what is in it. Anyone reading this who’s in the environmental field got an idea as to how?

So, what are we hiding? If it hasn’t been done by us, shame on us. If it’s been done by “Glantz” or some other anti, they’d be ALL over it if it were bad. Just like the “aiming at children” packaging, nobody wants to bring THAT up until recently. Sadly, it’s been being brought up for some time. Why not get ahead of it? Why WAIT until we’re sideswiped by a big ANTZ truck full of what they WANT to tell us. If we’re not LEADING this industry in research, we’re all pounding sand.

VMS: Again, I have to agree here. We need to be on the ball and get on the offensive. No data is bad data, bad data is bad data, but GOOD data even if it has BAD results, can be improved upon. Also, to be fair, I don’t think the community is really hiding anything, I think some of us are just more reluctant in wanting to KNOW. Does that make sense?

Kevin: I do “what I can” to support and advocate. Sometimes I’m spot on, sometimes I’m out of line.
I DO what I can. I don’t like waiting, I like action. I don’t like being told to shut up. I don’t like being told “don’t talk about that”. I don’t like being suppressed. This is TOO frigging important.

VMS: I had an entire blog written up and dedicated to this subject. The “little advocates” compared to the big advocates. I haven’t published it yet because it’s mostly me getting really frustrated and angry.

Lately though, I have seen too many “that’s silly” “we can’t do that” “don’t do that” “been there done that it didn’t work” “why didn’t you run this past me first” and the one I hate the most, “let us deal with it”.

I have watched every day people, those working as a cashier or a stay at home mom, who want to get involved in advocacy, who are trying their best with what little they know, get told they’re basically a nuisance, that they’re in the way, and incapable of coming up with any good ideas that support the cause.

This treatment of the “little advocates” is unacceptable in my opinion. Us little people with tiny voices and a lack of experience put a lot of these people on point as our front men & women and those people accepted that responsibility. With that responsibility should come the decency to treat us “little advocates” with patience and respect. If we don’t deserve that at the very least…

Know what I think? Screw them. No one in this industry, any company or another advocate tells me what I can and can’t do and none of you should let them tell you either. Suggestions are great, advice is amazing, but if they shoot you down and make you feel like a fool, fuck them. Find someone/something else to put your support in and don’t let it defeat your purpose!

If your message is STRONG, if it can be backed up by evidence and you are prepared to defend your message, then go for it! Either people will pay attention or they won’t. Do NOT let anyone in this community tell you that your THOUGHTS or IDEAS or EFFORTS to protect this product are ‘not good enough”.

fight

Kevin: I will do what Dr. Farsalinos said above, at any cost, including questioning integrity.

VMS: In the last 6 months I have watched many people change their stance on what to fight and what not to fight. 3 months ago, letting companies know that we thought their kid friendly logos were bad, was a GOOD idea and was ENCOURAGED. Now? It’s “who cares?” “this is an adult product being sold to adults in an adult store.” Funny that because 3 months ago that’s not what I was hearing. Reminder, the ANTZ are still attacking child friendly branding, it is still a problem and it is one that our community CAN CHANGE. Put your money where your mouth is. Tell these companies you don’t like their branding, why you don’t approve of it, and then endeavor to buy products from other companies who clearly care about protecting this product.

It’s the same thing with the Diacetyl and AP issues. Here in the UK and Canada, measures were taken to remove products from sale that contained levels that were deemed unsafe, yet the US has kind of just ignored it.  This is another incident where I read that we should just be quiet about it and let other people deal with it in in private and away from the public. Erm. No.

If a company is playing Russian Roulette with my health, I am not going to sit here and let them get away with it while I’m told to shut up and let other more experienced people deal with it…behind closed doors where we (the public) have no idea what’s being done to correct theses issues! Uh uh. Not happening. Same as above, tell a company you don’t like their test results and move to a brand that has results YOU are happy with.

Kevin: I also believe this:

speak

VMS: One voice may be small and quiet, but when we put all our voices together, we become loud and thunderous.

As always,

Keep On #Vaping On~

Kevin.

Health Journalists. Ethics & Truth. Don’t Shoot The Messenger.

ethics2In the U.S. there’s Health Journalism conference…. I think it ends today….

On health. For people. Presumably on the health of people. That intrigues me. These people write about health. YOU are the messenger.

One can only presume your job is to give absolutely and without question, balanced and truthful information to your readers about facts on whatever subject of health  you’re writing on.

That’s pretty important. Someone looks to you for information. Pretty hefty responsibility if you ask me.

In my own “not so glamorous” day job, I service security systems. Pretty unimportant, until you consider ALL have life saving devices. Fire, Heat detection. Burglary. Medical pendants. Panic buttons. Holdup alarms. Other things integrated with the systems. Pretty important.

If I’m wrong, or make a poor decision or say, don’t do my job to the best of my ability, someone potentially could get hurt or die. I look at that as huge. I need to be right every time. No room for error or misleading calculations. I can’t just do “part of my job”. Lives are at stake.

I vape. I use an e-cig. I’m almost 2 years smoke-free. If you write about health, surely the idea of tobacco harm reduction has come across your keyboard at least once. Surely you’ve heard of vaping or at least an e-cigarette as a way to reduce or stop smoking.

Surely if you’re a “science/med “journo”, e-cigs have crossed your path. If not in the science side of your journalism with technology, certainly the subject has come up either with you or your readings along the lines of your health interests. Someone you know. No?

Good or bad, you’ve at least heard of e-cigs or vaping. Is that not a huge part of health? Smoking/quitting smoking? Ways… means… struggles…controversy in the e-cigarette world… ringing a bell? No? REALLY? Wow.  If you’re a journalist and you haven’t heard of this by now, you need to read more than you write to inform your readers.

Get out more. Talk to your professional friends. Responsibly. Professionally. With truth. If you don’t LIKE the truth, at least LINK the truth. That would just be a courtesy to the reader you are trying to inform. *Wink*.

enough

Here’s help towards the truth, it’s on almost every blog post I do:

ecigarette-research.org

who are able to talk/email with you about that truth at M.O.V.E.:

I’d expect in my 47 years that truth, not opinion,  in journalism, especially HEALTH journalism, would be a given.

Wait a minute… maybe not. Seems some “journalists” are like some in public health.

Lets meet a “science/med journo” person. I didn’t see a specific magazine or health e-zine, “science/med journo” is what is claimed.

j2sciencemed journo3

REMINDER: not tweeting my opinions.

j2sciencemed journo

The “YES” and the “THE” as they are capitalized, in my opinion, are opinion  – but for clarity, that’s just my opinion.

Maybe I’m taking this out of context?

It’s not a crime to be entertained or like popcorn.

Doing this blog entertains me.

Now I come to the trust part of my blog. trust

Imagine an older person, who may be afraid of asking questions to anyone, or not knowing anyone who vapes.

Maybe she’s tried every other method to quitting smoking there is known to man. Maybe she’s afraid to try e-cigarettes.

All she sees in the MEDIA is bad, or at least that is what she remembers.

Maybe she’s new to the online twitter world and unsure and only uninformed by default …finding out on twitter about e-cigs for the first time and learning on twitter with a random search. UGH.

Maybe, just maybe she sees misinformation and decides to keep smoking.

Meet this lady. She walked into a vape shop. (Thank you for that blog, Deb Iten!)

This is why ethics and truth is in question.

fight

So, you see, I fight for that lady.

The M.O.V.E. Organization represents the professional community who fights for that lady.

Other Twitter & Facebook members feverishly FIGHT for that lady.

Along with all the other babbling I do on twitter, facebook and here where

I did a survey of over 7,000 people WORLDWIDE…

Certainly, I am no journalist, but I am an advocate. I and many others watch for this very thing:

Misinformation.

Don’t take it personally. Take it personally. Doesn’t matter.

I distrust YOU because you claim “don’t know enough”,

Just like all the others.

If you don’t know what you’re supposed to “know” by now, after ecigs have had 10+ years on the market, you’re more idiotic than the posts I call you out on.

If you’re in the health field and you write about it without the truth, shame ON you.

To be informative, you must be informed. I learn something EVERY day about vaping. I DON’T know everything, but I’ll ask, read, question things and then read some more.

 UPDATE May 7th:

This journalist, Tara Haelle, released this on the recording of those tweets, to be fair I’ve included it here!

AHCJ15 Panel on E-Cigarettes/Vaping

I, and thousands like me, smarter than I am are advocating for a reason.

To HELP people, to give them the information. To help change LIVES if they choose to do so.

VapeMeStoopid does this VERY WELL, here.

If you’re claiming you’re a journalist and can’t do

15 minutes of research

to inform your readers,

Well… you’re not doing your frigging job.

I just hope one of us get to that lady before you do.
